Cultural Programs:

The world famous Mt Hagen Cultural Festival is held in mid August of each year, whilst the Goroka Festival is held in mid September in conjunction with the nation's Independence celebrations. Apart from these major festivals, we have other minor events right around the country. Further details of these events and festivals are listed below.

Mt Hagen cultural festival is held in the central highlands town ship of Mt Hagen. Participants from the 800 plus different tribes come together in this one central location to show case their respective cultures and traditions to the beat of their kundu drums and outclass one another. This is a spectacular event where you have the only opportunity to see the different tribes in one location at one time. It is a memorable experience and a chance not to be missed.

Taking into consideration of these spectacular events, we are pleased to offer the following tour program's that includes these festivals.

MT HAGEN CULTURAL FESTIVAL:

TOUR HGU001 - 10 DAYS/9 NIGHTS:

DAY 1 - SUNDAY
Arrive at the Jacksons airport in Port Moresby, after customs and immigration formalities, you will be met and transferred to your onward connecting flight PX274 to Rabaul. Upon arrival at the Tokua airport in Rabaul, you will be met and transferred to your hotel.
Overnight: Kokopo Village Resort (2 nights)

DAY 2 - MONDAY (L)
Today will be a full day tour of the Kokopo and Rabaul areas. After the 1994 twin volcanic eruptions of Mt Tavurvur and Mt Vulcan, the township of Rabaul was completely destroyed by the eruptions. The town was shifted to now Kokopo including the airport at Tokua.
Your tour will include visits to the newly established township of Kokopo, the market, Kokopo museum and continue to Rabaul where you visit the devastated town of Rabaul and its surroundings. A visit will also be made to the Tavurvur volcano and the hot springs (boiling water). Time permitting other site's if interest will be included.

DAY 3 - TUESDAY
Transfer from your hotel to the Tokua airport for your flight PX275 Rabaul to Port Moresby. Upon arrival at the Jacksons airport in Port Moresby, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Afternoon city tour, including visit's to the National Parliament House (outside view only), National Museum, Nature Park and other sites of interest.

DAY 4 - WEDNESDAY (LD)
Transfer to the Jacksons airport for your flight PX864 Port Moresby to Tari. Upon arrival at the Tari airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. This afternoon will be a sightseeing tour of the Tari town and surrounding areas.
Overnight: Yangome Guest House (2 nights)

DAY 5 - THURSDAY (BLD)
Hela Province with its provincial town of Tari is the home of the Huli wig-men. The Huli's have been great warriors and still to this day. They are popular for their colourful face painting decorations and well designed human hair wigs. You spend the whole day exploring this great basin and learn of their cultures, traditions, way of living, marital status and rituals.

DAY 6 - FRIDAY (BL)
Today will be an interesting journey where you travel along the highway heading to Mt Hagen. This is an eye catching travel with beautiful sceneries, fast flowing rivers and natural waterfalls. Stops will be made along the way for photographs and site visits.
A brief stop in Mendi, the provincial capital town of Southern Highlands for lunch, after lunch the tour proceeds to Mt Hagen, travelling through alpine grasslands and moss forests.

DAY 7/8 - SATURDAY/SUNDAY (L)
These days will be spent visiting the Mt Hagen Cultural Festival. This is where you have the opportunity to see the 800 plus different tribes performing in one location. This is a cultural extravaganza, a chance not to be missed.

DAY 9 - MONDAY
Transfer to the Kagamuga airport in Mt Hagen for your flight PX181 Mt Hagen to Port Moresby. Upon arrival at the Jacksons airport in Port Moresby, you will be met and transferred to your hotel.

Day 10 - TUESDAY
Transfer to the Jacksons airport, Port Moresby for your international departure flight.

TOUR HGU002 - 10 DAYS/9 NIGHTS:

DAY 1 - WEDNESDAY
Arrive at the Jacksons airport in Port Moresby. After customs and immigration formalities, you will be met, greeted and transferred to your hotel.

DAY 2 - THURSDAY (LD)
Transfer from your hotel to the Jacksons airport for your flight PX990 Port Moresby to Wapenamanda. Upon arrival at the Wapenamanda airport in the Enga Province, you will be met and commence your sightseeing tour. Today you will be taken on a tour to Wabag town, the provincial capital of the Enga Province.
Enga Province is unique in that, the entire population of the Enga Province only speak one common local language with English and Pidgin being their second and third languages. Although, they speak one common local dialect, their cultures and traditions vary depending terrain and valleys they live in. A visit will be made to the Enga Cultural Centre (Taek Anda) where historical items from the various different tribes and colourful sand paintings are kept and are on display.

DAY 3 - FRIDAY (BL)
This morning a bird watching in and around the vicinity of the Kumul lodge grounds and the Murmur pass.
This morning, travel to the Walya valley where you will visit villages, natural waterfalls and fast flowing rivers. Return to Kumul lodge for lunch. After lunch you descend into the vast Nebilyer Valley and arrive at the village of Paiagona. Here you will witness different cultural groupings and tribes from various parts of the country perform their respective cultural dances (sing-sing) in this natural setting and in preparation for the next day's big festival in town.
Overnight: Hagen Travellers Inn (2 nights)

DAY 4 - SATURDAY (L)
This day will be spent visiting the Mt Hagen Cultural Festival.

DAY 5 - SUNDAY (LD)
Half day visit to the Mt Hagen Cultural Festival. After lunch, you leave the show ground and travel to the Waghi Valley, Jiwaka Province with visits to large floats of tea and coffee plantations and factories. Evening a cultural courting ceremony (Tanim Het, Karim Lek) performed by young boys and girls. This performance is an done by young boys and girls to show adulthood and are ready for marriage.

DAY 6 - MONDAY (BL)
Today will be a full day tour travelling along the highway heading for Goroka. Travel through the beautiful Chimbu gorge and passing Kundiawa town, the provincial capital of the Chimbu Province. You arrive at the highest summit of Daulo Pass overlooking the Goroka town and beautiful Asaro Valley.
A visit will be made to the Asaro village, where you will have the rare opportunity to see the eerie ritual performances of the famous "Asaro Mud-men" performing in their natural environment.

DAY 7 - TUESDAY (L)
Again you leave this morning for a full day tour along the highlands highway to Lae. This will be a scenic drive with beautiful picturesque sceneries en-route. A stop will be made at the Yonki Hydro Dam for lunch and photographs of this huge dam. Electricity for the entire highlands and coastal towns of Madang and Lae are supplied from this hydro.

DAY 8 - WEDNESDAY
Transfer to the Nadzab airport in Lae for your flight PX103/204 Lae to Rabaul. Upon arrival at the Tokua airport in Rabaul, you will be met and transferred to your hotel.
Overnight: Kokopo Village Resort (2 nights)

DAY 9 - THURSDAY (L)
Today will be a full day tour of Rabaul and surrounding areas. Rabaul was badly destroyed by the twin volcanic eruptions of Mt Tavurvur and Mt Vulcan in 1994. The town was then moved to Kokopo where it is to this day. Your tour will include visits to the devastated town of Rabaul, Tavurvur Volcano and hot springs.

DAY 10 - FRIDAY
Transfer to the Tokua airport in Rabaul for your flight PX275 Rabaul to Port Moresby. Upon arrival at the Jacksons airport in Port Moresby, you will be met and transferred to your onward international departure flight.

TOUR HGU003 - 10 DAYS/9 NIGHTS:

DAY 1 - MONDAY
Arrive at the Jacksons airport, Port Moresby. After customs and immigration formalities, you will be met, greeted and transferred to your onward connecting flight PX960 Port Moresby to Goroka. Upon arrival at the Goroka airport in Goroka, you will be met and transferred to your hotel.

DAY 2 - TUESDAY (LD)
Full day four wheel drive (4WD) vehicle transfer from Goroka to Kegsugl at the foot of the highest mountain in Papua New Guinea "Mt Wilhelm".
Overnight: Betty's Lodge

DAY 3 - WEDNESDAY (BLD)
Full day hike/trek Kegsugl to the base camp at Piunde Aunde Lakes. This hike is rate as moderate (grade 4) and you hike to thick rainforest and alpine grasslands.
Overnight: Base Camp

DAY 4 - THURSDAY (BLD)
Early morning hike/trek to the summit of Mt Wilhelm. After reaching the top of the summit you return back to the base camp before snow falls, arriving at the camp site approximately 10:00 am.
After rest and relaxation at the camp site, you trek back base camp to Kegsugl. This is an easy hike downhill.
Overnight: Bettys Lodge

DAY 6 - FRIDAY (BLD)
Today will be a four wheel drive (4WD) vehicle transfer Kegsugl to Minj in the Jiwaka Province. Travel is through the picturesque beautiful Chimbu Gorge.

Day 7/8 - SATURDAY/SUNDAY (L)
Today you leave the fertile Waghi valley and head to Mt Hagen. You spent these days visiting the Mt Hagen Cultural Festival.

DAY 9 - MONDAY
Transfer to the Kagamuga airport, Mt Hagen for your flight PX181 Mt Hagen to Port Moresby. Upon arrival at the Jacksons airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Today a half day city tour including visits to the National Parliament House (outside view only), National Museum, Nature Park and other sites of interest.

GOROKA CULTURAL FESTIVAL

TOUR GKA004 - 9 DAYS/8 NIGHTS

DAY 1 - MONDAY
Arrive at the Jacksons airport Port Moresby. After customs and immigration formalities, you will be met, greeted and transferred to your onward connecting flight PX274 Port Moresby to Rabaul. Upon arrival at the Tokua airport in Rabaul, you will be met and transferred to your hotel.

DAY 2 - TUESDAY (L)
Today is a full day tour of the Rabaul and Kokopo areas. Rabaul was destroyed by the twin volcanic eruptions of Mt Tavurvur and Mt Vulcan. The main town and the airport has been moved to Kokopo. Your tour will include visits to this devastated town, Tavurvur Volcano and the hot springs and other sites of interest.

DAY 3 - WEDNESDAY
Transfer to the Tokua airport in Rabaul for your flight PX275 Rabaul to Port Moresby. Upon arrival at the Jacksons airport Port Moresby, you will be met and transferred to your onward connecting flight PX186 Port Moresby to Mt Hagen. Upon arrival at the Kagamuga airport in Mt Hagen, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. This afternoon a visit will be made to the beautiful Mt Hagen market. Here you will see different varieties of vegetable, sweet potato, taro, peanuts, banana and other garden produce and fruits are sold in large quantities. Time permitting, a visit will be made to the Mt Hagen town and surrounding areas.

DAY 4 - THURSDAY (LD)
Today will be a full day tour of the lush and fertile Waghi Valley. Today's tour will include visits to large tea and coffee plantations with their respective factories. Visits will also be made to typical local villages and learn of their cultures, traditions, lifestyles, marital ceremonies and rituals.
Evening a cultural courting ceremony (Tanim Het/Karim Lek) performed by young boys and girls to show adulthood and they are ready for marriage.
Overnight: Bala Guest House (Minj, Jiwaka Province)

DAY 5 - FRIDAY (BL)
Today will be a full day tour travelling along the highway heading for Goroka. Travel through the beautiful Chimbu gorge and passing Kundiawa town, the provincial capital of the Chimbu Province. You arrive at the highest summit of Daulo Pass overlooking the Goroka town and beautiful Asaro Valley.
After a brief stop for lunch and photographs, your tour descends into the beautiful Asaro valley and onto Goroka.

These days are spent visiting the Goroka Cultural Show. Goroka is the original home of the famous Asaro Mud-men and they come in large numbers at the show.

Transfer to the Goroka airport, Goroka for your flight PX961 Goroka to Port Moresby. Upon arrival at the Jacksons airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Today a half day city tour including visits to the National Parliament House (outside view only), National Museum, Nature Park and other sites of interest.

DAY 10 - TUESDAY
Transfer to the Jacksons airport Port Moresby for your international departure flight.

1. Tour programs as published are our standard programs. However, we can always tailor other tour programs including these festivals upon client's specific requirements and requests.
2. We have published tours for Mt Hagen and Goroka Cultural Festivals (Show) because dates for these shows are fixed. However, for other minor festivals around the country, the dates and period of the events vary and are not stable.

Based on past experiences, dates for some of these festivals are:-

- Malangan Mask Festival in Rabaul - 2nd week of July
